An oily dark roast for cowpokes. Perfect for cowboy coffee by the campfire, or long nights in the tractor during harvest season.
About Oil Derek
Legend has it that cattle rancher and goofball YouTuber, Farmer Derek Klingenberg, was named after the oil derricks that can be seen across his native south central Kansas. So for our first forray into extra dark roast territory, we thought it fitting to play on words a bit with our friend's name.
- Coffee origins: Nicaragua & Papua New Guinea (sourced directly)
- Roast level: Extra Dark / French Roast - Beans have oils plainly visible on their surface
- Tasting notes: Smoky & rustic - Burnt tumbleweed, Tractor tire, Saddle leather
Farmer Derek Klingenberg
Derek's family has been ranching and farming in south-central Kansas for a century. About 10 years ago, Derek discovered that he had a talent for making ridiculous farming videos and song parodies and putting them on YouTube. More recently he's become a drone/cow artist and regularly serenades his cattle with his trombone. Some of Derek's videos have gone viral and his top videos have over 30 million combined views.
We became friends with the Klingenberg family just over a decade ago when Roaster Brian met Derek's younger brother at seminary in Virginia. After graduation, Derek's brother became a pastor but Plain Ol' Brian went on to become Roaster Brian, founder of Ross Street Roasting. This new Farmer Derek coffee is a product of our decade-long relationship that's morphed into a great business partnership.
